Reading
IM Reading (4th & 5th Grade)
What is IM Reading?
IM Reading is a team-based reading competition where students read books from a selected list and compete by answering trivia-style questions that assess comprehension and recall. The competition is designed to promote a love of reading, teamwork, and critical thinking in a fun and engaging format.
Who can participate?
IM Reading is open to interested 4th and 5th-grade students. Students will work in small teams and prepare for an end-of-year intradistrict competition and/or the CIU 10 Elementary Reading Competition, which will be held at State College Area High School on Saturday, May 2nd. Although we will try to accommodate as many students as possible, participation is not guaranteed and depends on the number of coaches; individual assignment to a team may also depend on participants' availability for our competition.
What does participation involve?
- Students will read from a list of 26 selected books, with teams working together to ensure all titles are covered.
- Teams will meet no more than once per week after school
- At GW, we are looking to have practices in the GW Library, from 3:00 - 4:00 on Tuesdays, beginning February 10th and running through April 28th
- Practices will include distributing books, mock competitions, trivia questions, and strategy-building for teamwork and quick recall.
- Emphasis is placed on inclusivity, encouragement, and enjoying reading—students are valued regardless of how many books they read.
Supervision & Support
- Students will be fully supervised during practices and on competition day.
- Each team will be supported by a coach (during practices) and additional adult volunteers (on the competition day).
Permission Forms
- If your child is interested in participating, please fill out this Permission Form and return it to school.
